Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. Sports desk. Att Ben W. Yacht race. No 1 -- 'Barging the Line.' Baruna (black bull) on left and Nordlys (white hull schooner) use same strategy to get ahead of other yachts in start of Trans-Pacific Yacht Race. They are shown on starboard tack (wind coming from vessel's right) crossing the bows of other yachts which are coming up to the starting line (yellow marker in foreground). This maneuver forces other yachts to stand clear at Baruna and Nordlys have right of way because they are on starboard tack, others being on port track (wind from vessel's left). Note one yacht Sea Queen, fending off from Nordlys. No 2 -- Nordlys coming bow on and just passing starting flag, She was first of yacht to continue on starboard tack and make for east end of Catalina Island because of light wind. Baruna came about and headed for Pt. Fermin on Port Tack as did most of other yachts which at Pt. Fermin changed to starboard tack, headed for west end of Catalina Island and the open sea. No 3 -- Baruna (black hull) ahead of yachts nearing Pt. Fermin. No 4 -- Same".
