S. S. Winnipeg, French Liner, in drydock, with ripped bottom ...at Todd's Los Angeles Shipyards, San Pedro, 1951
Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. 1951-12-29. No. 4-5: Bids will be asked for repairs to badly scarred bottom of French Line freighter Winnepeg shown here in drydock in the Todd's Los Angeles shipyards, San Pedro. The ship struck uncharted granit-like pinnacle protruding just high enough to act like can-opener on ship's bottom. In picture, Robert Lampietti, Pacific Coast Representative of French Line, and Jack Scotto, Los Angeles manager, inspect damage. Damage shown extends 340 feet of ship's length. Damage was unofficially estimated at more than $250,000. In some places only one inch of steel prevented ship's bottom tanks from being ripped open".
