Smallest boat to cross over to Catalina, 1952

Nos 1-2-3-4-5-6: Photos show Duane Hale, 16, 959 West 26th Street, San Pedro, in smallest boat known to have sailed across Catalina Channel. 'Fair Winds' is only 8 feet long, has a mast of 14 feet and carries only 24 feet of canvas. Hale left Portuguese Bend Friday at 3:30 p.m. arrived at the Isthmus at 3:30 Saturday A.M., slept on the beach and then sailed for Avalon. From Portuguese Bend to Isthmus, 'Fair Winds' was dismasted once, capsized 4 times. From Isthmus to Avalon she capsized three times. Hale said 'Never again and I dont't [sic] recommend that anyone else try it -- it's just not enough boat. I was lucky".
