The auto at his left was driven into school parking lot by Mrs. Virginia S. Newton. The hat on the ground belongs to her ex-husband, Thomas Newton, who shot her, then turned gun on himself. The coins and wrapped money comprised contributions to the Hiram Shoemaker fund, which Mrs. Newton was carrying as she stepped from her car into a volley of shots. 81-82: Views of shooting scene on parking area of Braddock Drive Elementary School. Where cop is stooping down, he is A.E Smith of Venice and car on his left was parked by Mrs. Virginia S. Newton. 31-32: Views of shooting scene from street. Mrs. Newton's auto is that at far end of left row (or only row that shows). 29-30-47: Mrs. Virginia S. Newton, 49 schoolteacher at Braddock Drive Elementary school, under treatment at Santa Monica Emergency hospital with 5 bullet wounds. 5-6: Thomas Newton, 64, 9944 National blvd., Palms, the divorced husband, being treated at Santa Monica Emergency Hospital for self-inflicted bullet wounds.
